A New Service-
Trafford's BME community Development Service
A New service is now being introduced looking at black mental health experiences in Trafford. The service is commissioned through the Trafford Primary Care Trust to address discrimination within mental health services. The service is supported by the Delivering Race Equality (DRE) agenda which works to improve the emotional wellbeing of all ethnic minorities.
How does it work?
The Trafford BME CDW service is about WELLS. WELLS stands for:
- Working with all health professionals to improve BME experiences and recovery.
- Encouraging more active involvement for BME users/carers.
- Listening to experiences and concerns about current services.
- Looking at the bigger picture such as housing, jobs, finance and family support.
- Supporting BME community to have a voice to make a difference.
Emotional problems are very common.
Many people experience emotional problems at some point in their lives. In any one year 1 in 4 people in the UK are affected by mental health problems requiring help from a GP.
This is likely to be true for most people regardless of cultural and or racial background.

Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Communities
- In England, the term black and minority ethnic (BME), is used to refer to all people of minority ethnic status, These include groups such as those from black or African, Caribbean, South Asian and Chinese origins. These groups may be visibly different because of colour, cultural and physical differences.
- Less visible white minorities, such as those from Irish, Mediterranean and East europe are also included as minority ethnic communities.
Emotional health and Wellbeing
Unequal experiences!
- For some time in the UK, it has been recognised that BME groups and individuals needing help to overcome difficulties with mental ill health, have unequal experiences of services, compared with other groups.
- Research also shows differences in the reasons contribution to emotional ill-health, treatment and recovery patterns between various ethnic groups.
