Mental ill health can present in many different forms and its impact can be mild and short term or profound and lifelong, regardless of diagnosis. In any one year 25% of us are affected by mental health problems, although many of us do not seek professional help. 80% of people who see a professional about their symptoms are experiencing more common mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and other stress related problems. The problems listed below are ones that many people may recognise the symptoms of and are often triggered by life events.
Their symptoms are commonly treated by GPs or through the support of self-help groups and social support. In some cases symptoms can be more severe and referral to specialist services may be required. www.cambsmentalhealthinfo.nhs.uk (2007) Do you feel life is a struggle?
How can blueSCI help? Many people consult their GP for emotional difficulties. Often the GP will offer advice, prescribe medication to relieve such symptoms as anxiety or depression, or recommend contact with a voluntary organisation such as blueSCI. A member of library staff will exchange your prescription for the book that has been recommended. Click here to download a summary of the books on the list
The prescription specifies the length of time for which the book can be borrowed, this will normally be between 6-8 weeks. You can extend the borrowing time if you need to.
