Do you feel that life's a struggle?

Social Prescribing

Many people experience mental health problems at some point in their lives. Mental ill health can present in many different forms and its impact can be mild and short term or profound and lifelong, regardless of diagnosis. In any one year 25% of us are affected by mental health problems, although many of us do not seek professional help.

80% of people who see a professional about their symptoms are experiencing more common mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and other stress related problems. The problems listed below are ones that many people may recognise the symptoms of and are often triggered by life events.

  • Bereavement
  • Depression
  • Post-Natal Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Eating Disorders
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Their symptoms are commonly treated by GPs or through the support of self-help groups and social support. In some cases symptoms can be more severe and referral to specialist services may be required. www.cambsmentalhealthinfo.nhs.uk (2007)

Books on Prescription to go to the specific BOP web page click here

Many people consult their GP for emotional difficulties. GP’s might refer the person to a counsellor or to mental health services where psychologist or psychiatrists can provide treatment. The availability of these services is limited. Often the GP will offer advice, prescribe medication to relieve such symptoms as anxiety or depression, or recommend contact with a voluntary organisation such as blueSCI.

Books can help
Many self-help books have been shown to be very useful in helping people to overcome a range of psychological problems. The use of books as a means to providing psychological therapy is known as ‘books on prescription’

The scheme includes books on many of the common psychological problems that people experience, including depression, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive problems, compulsive gambling, social phobia, panic, anger, stress, low self-esteem and the aftermath of sexual abuse.

How the scheme works
GP’s and other professionals (such as psychologists and counsellors) have a list of self help books recommended by specialists and can issue an appropriate ‘book on prescription’ to you. Click here to see book list

Once you have your prescription you can take it to one of the Trafford libraries or get someone else to get it for you. A member of library staff will exchange your prescription for the book that has been recommended. Click here to download a summary of the books on the list

libraries list

The prescription specifies the length of time for which the book can be borrowed, this will normally be between 6-8 weeks. You can extend the borrowing time if you need to. You will not incur any fines if you return the book after the due date.

What if the book is not available?
If the book you have been prescribed is not available then a copy will be obtained from another library. You will be contacted when the book is available.

Is the service confidential?
Yes, all your details will be treated confidentially. This means the staff will not divulge any information about who is borrowing the book or what the book is about.

What if a book doesn’t help?
The book on the list often prove useful, but may not be effective for everyone. If you have tried hard to use the book but you find that your difficulties or stress persists, then you need to return to your GP (or professional who prescribed the book) so that further advise can be obtained.

Person Centred Counselling

What is Counselling?
At times in our lives we can all feel unhappy for a while, which may lead to confused feelings, which may not go away, or other difficulties. These unhappy times may or may not be connected to a specific problem.

For some people it helps to talk to someone outside their immediate family or friends.

Counselling can provide the time and space to work with your problems, to make sense of life, deal with specific problems, help decision making and work through inner feelings of confusion.

It is important to feel you can get along with, and trust your counsellor for counselling to work.

The counsellors are qualified to Diploma level, which is accredited to the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

This means that the counsellors adhere to BACP guidelines for Good Practice and participate in regular, compulsory supervision from professional counsellors, both privately and from the tutors at PCCS.

The method of counselling used is from the Person Centred Model. This takes the view that every individual has the internal resources they need for personal growth.

Person-centred counselling aims to provide three 'core conditions' which helps with this personal growth, these are:

  • Un-conditional positive regard
  • Empathy
  • Congruence
  • Counselling Resources Website

Counselling Aim
The aim of counselling is for the counsellor to help you deal better with your problems and / or make changes in your life. The counsellor will help you to find ways to help yourself.

Counselling does not:
It will not put right your problems with your family relationships, finance or emotions, but it can help to make these easier to deal with.
Counselling won’t change what has happened to you, but may help you live more easily with it.

Person Centred counsellors don’t tell you what to do. They help you to find your own solutions to your problems at your own pace. You are the expert in your life and counselling helps you with this.

Referrals
If you would like to use counselling, please contact blueSCI on Tel:0161 912 4828 to make an appointment.

Confidentiality
Counselling is private and confidential, where any issues or problems can be aired in safety.

Exceptions to this will be discussed in your first session with your counsellor.

Cancellations
If you wish to cancel a session, 24hrs notice would be required. If you cancel and do not contact blueSCI within 2 days, it will be assumed that you no longer wish to continue the counselling.

Remember
Counselling is not a ‘quick fix’ solution. It takes time, commitment and consistency to help with problems which may have been a lifetime in the making. Your counsellors’ commitment to you strives to provide an environment of trust and safety where you can feel comfortable to be yourself.
